  2. RESPONSE: to Ch. 2
I actually feel bad for Daisy & Mr. Wilson because they have been married to their spouse for years and now they are secretely dating someone else. I think Mrs.Wilson is annoying and I don't understand why Tom is cheating on his wife daisy with the stout Myrtle. CH 1- i thought was so boring and in CH. 2 the book finally was picking up.

  3. Quote and Response from Chapter 2:

"I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn't fit to lick my shoe"

    - I really don't like Mrs.Wilson...
she says that about George her husband of 11 years. She only married him because he was gentleman not because she loved him. Poor Daisy and George.

  4. Group 4: Chapter 1 Dialectical Journal

    Summary:
The story begins with the narrator, Nick contemplating on the lessons his father taught him when he was young, he reflected on his currehnt living position, and on his neighbor, Gatsby. Nick goes to see an old friend and his cousin out on the east egg. Nick meets Ms. Baker, and he speaks with her and the others about Gatsby, their lives, and race. As Nick is about to leave it is revealed through Daisy and Tom that he is engaged, but hasn't enough money. Nick leaves and notices Gatby staring out at the sea, as Nick goes to call him, he is gone.

    Reaction to Summary:
As is the case with many first chapters, this is a chapter dedicated to exposition, half of the chapter is spent discussing Nick's life prior to the current point in the novel. This chapter sets up suppoting characters many of whom are superfluous to Gatsby, the main titular character. The chapter also sets up something, some sort of conflict between Daisy and Tom. The end of the chapter gives way for more about Gatsby, assuming he is a deep, main character.

    Quote:
"'Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone' he told me, 'just remember that all the people in the world haven't had the advantages that you've had.'"
    -Nick's father p.1

    Reaction to quote:
This is a quote within a quote, being reflected upon by the narrator, this seemingly simple quote holds more than it would seem. As Nick seems to believe it does, at any rate it seems to shape Nick's philosophies. It also provides a contrast between the philosophies that are most prevalent in most of the characters thus far given in the novel. No one else except Nick seems to reflect on the fortunes they have that others do not, everyone seems shallow and empty.

    Chapter 4

Nick calls of all the people that have been at Gatsby's parties over the summer. Then he talks about how Gatsby took him out to lunch in New York City in his rolls royce. They have a good time talking about Gatsby's past, how he moved around because his family died and left him all this money. Then he tells Nick to have tea with Jordan because she has something to tell Nick. When he meets with Jordan she tells him how Daisy and Gatsby were together before he left for the war and after he left she married Tom. The night before their wedding she got really drunk and Jordan had to help her down to the dinner.

Responce- Obviously when Gatsby and Daisey get together something between them is going to happen. If the night before her wedding she got that drunk and now her husband is cheeting on her, and her and Gatsby were in love before, its going to start something new.

Quote- "Over the bridge, with the sunlight through the girders making a constant flicker apon the moving cars and the city rising up across the river in white heeps..." pg 68

    F. Scott FItzgerald has really awesome imagery in this paragragh. I feel like im driving in the car with them down the high way with the sun flickering in my eyes the way he describes. They way he can make the scene from the novel come alive makes it seem so real.

He bought a dozen volumes on banking and credit and investment securities, stood in his shelf in red and gold like new money from the mint. He had gone to a college buddies house Tom Buchanans, He described their house as a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion, over looking the bay front windows glowed with gold.

Gatsby's not really making sense and talking about some "matter", and about Miss Baker. Nick is taking her to tea today. A police officer tries to pull them over but Gatsby falshes him a white card and he leaves them alone. Nick meets up with Gatsby later on for lunch with another man named Meyer Wolfshein. Gatsby realizes he angered Nick earlier that day, Wolfshein fixed the 1919 World Series and the police have been trying to catch him but he's too smart. They meet up wih Tom and when Nick turns around Gatsby's disappeared. Miss Baker explains to Nick about how Gatsby and Daisy were in love at some point when they were 18. The day of Tom and Daisy's wedding, Daisy got really drunk and said she didn't want to marry Tom anymore. She had a letter in her hand that she would not let go of. She did end up marrying Tom though, and Miss Baker said she has never seen a woman so in love with her husband. Tom got into a car accident not long adter they came home from their 3 month honeymoon and he had another woman in the car, which got into the papers. Gatsby bouyght his house so that he would be right across the bay from Daisy. Gatsby wants Nick to invite Daisy over and then let him come over so he can see Daisy. At the end of the chapter Miss Baker and Nick kiss.
RESPONSE: Jordan and Nick are definitely in love and the last part of chapter 4 is so cute. Gatsby's plan is a little sketchy, but he apparently is still in love with Daisy...a lot. The man Gatsby and Nick meet up with for lunch seemed king of annoying.

  9. Chapter 4:
Nick over heard some ladies talking about Gatsby. It was said that Gatsby is a bootlegger and supposibly killed a man when he found out that Van Hidenburg was his nephew and he was second cousin to the Devil. In the chapter it names a ton of people from both "eggs" that attened Gatsby's parties over the summer. Klipspringer is a guy who goes to like every party and hes always the last one to leave and stays for such a long time. He got the nickname "the boarder" because people doubt he really actually lives somewhere. Gatsby showed up at Nick's house in his nice car and told Nick they were going to go out to lunch. Nick and Gatsby have talked 6 times in the last month & Nick said that Gatsby rarely speaks. Gatsby wanted to make it clear that everything Nick has heard about him was probably a lie. So, Gatsby told alot about himself.

  11. CHAPTER 4: Response

Personally, I find it weird how Gatsby randomly showed up to Nick's apartment and told him he was going to lunch with him. I really want Nick and Jordan Baker to be together. The book once again has been picking up and isn't as boring as chapter one was...

  12. CHAPTY 4: Quote & Response

"Filled with faces dead and gone. Filled with friends gone now forever."

I did this quote because I think its meaningful. This part is when Rosy gets shot and how friends just come and go. Just as death can come- quick and unexpected.

quote and response for chap.4 journal:
"Unlike Gatsby and Tom Buchanan, I had no girl who disembodied face floated along the dark corners and blinding signs, and so I drew up the girl beside me, tightening my arms. Her wan scornful mouth smiled, and so I drew her up again, closer, this time to my face." (80)
    RESPONSE:
So far this is my favorite scene in the whole entire book. Nick is falling in love with Jordan and it's so cute. I only picked this quote cause I loved this scene.

    Chapter 4 journal and quote

    summary-
During a trip to New York City, Nick learns alot about Gatsby. That he went to Oxford is from San Francisco and received many prestigous medals Gatsby gets out of a speeding ticket by flashing some white card. At lunch Gatsby introduces Nick to Meyer Wolfsheim who supposedly fixed the world series in 1919. He is an odd man who apparently has alot of connections, and this sparks Nick to rethink her wealth. Nick then sees Jordan and Jordan finally tells Nick that "extravagent" thing that Gatsby told her at the party and it was that Gatsby in love with Daisy. Daisy and Gatsby fell in love a long time ago but then Gatsby left for the war and Daisy married Tom but Tom cheated on her. Getsby only bought his house in order to be near gatsby. Gatsby wants Nick to invite Daisy to tea.

    reaction-
I think that it is odd that Gatsby is still in love with Daisy is still in love with Daisy even after being apart. If Gatsby was such a powerful and rich man i would expected him to win her back with things. Who did Tomcheat on Daisy with?

"shes not to know about it. You're just supposed to invite her to tea"

I picked this quote because i think that this tea party won't be what he wants it to be.

    Chapter: 4

Response: As we know Gatsby told Jordan that he is still in love with Daisy. That is why Gatsby wants Nick to ask Daisy to come over for tea. For Daisy to get that drunk on her wedding night could mean she didn't really want to marry tom. She knows she had to because Tom has the money and all Gatsby had was love for her and that was just not enough.

Response to quote: F. Scott Fitzgerald describes everything in detail so you can picture it in your head. It makes you relate to the book even though it is older than we are.

    Chapter 5

Response: Daisy comes over and is not expecting Gatsby to be there. Gatsby becomes very nervous when she is there but later in the chapter he get better. the only thing that is weird is why does Daisy cry over the shirts in Gatsby's house? it is because she loves him and now he has money so she can get together with him and leave Tom. And will this even last?

Response to quote:Gatsby is so nervous when daisy comes over. But doesn't every one get that way on their first date. Because you finaly get to meet them but you are unsure if they will like what you are wearing.

    Chapter 2

Response:does the land of ashes have any importance to the story? well we found out who was on the phone with tom. her name is myrtle. then while they are at that party Nick says that this is his second time being drunk. But one important thing in this chapter is that when myetle talks abotu daisy tom hits her. why would he do that? doesn't he dislike daisy? so why now is he defending her?

Responce to quote: Nick thinks it is so calm that if anything out of the blue pops up he would not be alarmed.
